Being Functional

Posted on: Thursday, September 7th, 2006 at 5:30 PM

Here are a couple of words I hear every day at work:

Functional
Functionality
Cross Functionality
Pivot
Metric
Run Rate

Microsoft Excel and its spreadsheets are taking over people’s lives. I know of people who cant live without Excel and the functionality it gives to their day to day tasks.. The lexical choices above have now entered into my personal vocabulary and now influence my day to day life.

Functionality and cross functionality crop up from time to time now in unlikely trains of thought. I was on the bus this evening and I was admiring the cash machine/collector ( Older Glaswegian readers will know it as Freddie Fast Fare ) I like the aesthetics of old buses, but One Man Operated /ticket machines/cash collectors never attracted me until recently.

I admire its cross functionality, it gets the job done quicker. I wonder what the run rate of a bus driver is when he is giving out tickets. Its so.. functional. Cross functionality is the key to life and to the known universe.

Using functionality and cross functionality in your personal lexicon can make the most dimmest of people sound intelligent. Actually, if you work in business, it can make people hold you in high regard, no matter how one inept is at their day to day jobbing tasks.

I like the cross functionality of blogging…
