Being Functional

Posted on: Thursday, September 7th, 2006 at 5:30 PM

Here are a couple of words I hear every day at work:

Functional
Functionality
Cross Functionality
Pivot
Metric
Run Rate

Microsoft Excel and its spreadsheets are taking over people’s lives. I know of people who cant live without Excel and the functionality it gives to their day to day tasks.. The lexical choices above have now entered into my personal vocabulary and now influence my day to day life.

Functionality and cross functionality crop up from time to time now in unlikely trains of thought. I was on the bus this evening and I was admiring the cash machine/collector ( Older Glaswegian readers will know it as Freddie Fast Fare ) I like the aesthetics of old buses, but One Man Operated /ticket machines/cash collectors never attracted me until recently.

I admire its cross functionality, it gets the job done quicker. I wonder what the run rate of a bus driver is when he is giving out tickets. Its so.. functional. Cross functionality is the key to life and to the known universe.

Using functionality and cross functionality in your personal lexicon can make the most dimmest of people sound intelligent. Actually, if you work in business, it can make people hold you in high regard, no matter how one inept is at their day to day jobbing tasks.

I like the cross functionality of blogging…

The Joy Of Vaseline

Posted on: Wednesday, September 6th, 2006 at 5:40 PM

Vaseline, has many uses, both for external and internal uses. I seem to be the only person around who uses industrial strength Vaseline on my hair.

I told someone this the other day and that person looked at me as if I were an alien form of sometimes. Vaseline, is cheap, holds the hair in place, and gives a nice sheen ( as long as one doesn’t use too much )

Ive yet to find a suitable replacement. If you know of anything that controls unmanageable hair that is naturally frizzy, please let me know. Bit of variety..

Student Loan Tax

Posted on: Monday, September 4th, 2006 at 5:17 PM

Yes, I knew when I was 21 this would happen..

But when time passes and one is not in a job related to their student years and resulting qualification, it hits home how unjust a tax this was. I looked in my payslip today and a good amount given to Student Loans.

Oh why oh why Tony?

Online Dating II

Posted on: Saturday, September 2nd, 2006 at 5:06 PM

Well, I ended my association with on-line dating the other week. Its just no longer for me. I spoke to a lot of good people, but nothing had a spark, no romantic thoughts either from myself or from the opposite sex.

I think people have this idealistic view that with on-line dating, they are going to meet a mirror image of themselves. Or someone who is everything they wanted and all boxes are ticked. Its impossible and a relationship would be boring without diversity. Most women I spoke to look for the impossible.

Perhaps I was looking for the impossible as well.

Every woman wants a nice guy. There is no such thing. Ive mentioned in this blog before that all men are bastards but on various levels. The same applies to women because in my opinion there is no such thing as nice . Everyone has a dark side, we have hurt and been hurt. Its human nature.
