Glen Michael’s Baked Potato Cavalcade

Posted on: Monday, November 28th, 2005 at 8:23 PM

Coming home from hospital this evening I was graced by the smell of supper. Baked potato, cheese, and a big helping of side salad.

A normal evening meal you will say. However I have been eating this for supper most days since the start of November. Ive only recently thought as to why I have a baked potato every day.

The answer is simple: Glen Michael.

I saw Glen Michael in a restaurant having his lunch. My colleague and I recognised him instantly. The restaurant was full of under 25s so they did not know who this living legend was, or as to why we were star struck and couldn’t focus on our bland luncheon.

For those who don’t know who Glen Michael is, well:

He presented a children’s TV show for 26 years on Scottish Television called Glen Michael’s Cartoon Cavalcade. This was a mix of Glen reading out birthday wishes and competition questions etc and introducing a host of cartoons. He as aided and abetted by a talking oil lamp called Paladin and a succession of small dogs called Rusty.

In his 70s heyday, the cartoons were great. A young Scottish whipper-snapper would be entertained by the delights of Spiderman, Spiderwoman, Wonderwheels. Those were only a few. However at the shows nadir one would not be entertained by Roger Ramjet and old Three Stooges vignettes.

One thing that did not diminish was Glen Michael’s professionalism, enthusiasm, and warmth. The perfect kids TV host.

The show ended in 1991 ( I believe ) and Glen disappeared.

Well, back to the lunch. We stood transfixed as the living legend, the knight and OBE that he should be is our Glen tuck into a baked potato, cheese and a big side salad. He scoffed the lot with professionalism, enthusiasm and warmth.

We did think of confronting Glen for an autograph, but out of respect we wanted the 78 year old not to have his lunch ruined by us.

He looks good for a man his age, actually he looks fantastic. So fantastic, I have a photo of him as wallpaper on my PC.

Just thought it was so coincidental that i came across the day i actually saw Glen Michael in John Lewis! Wierd…. and just to note i am UNDER 25, and i remember him. He actually lives in a pretty affluent area in Ayr and is seen out and about almost everyday by my mum. She works in a coffee shop there and apparently he is a very pleasant man (but his wife is a bit nippy!), so i am sure he wouldnt begrudge you an autograph!

on a more serious note, i dont think anyone could have made me cry as i read a blog. I do hope your mum has been given a better doctor, and they are taking better care now. I wish you and your family all the love in the world, and you now have a complete stranger thinking of you. Take care, K

You know, you have made my evening because you are under 25 and know who the legend who lives silently amongst us is.

My colleague will be very happy when I inform him of this!

Thank you for the kind words regarding my mother. Time will tell as well as a rub of the green. This Doctor she has been given seems to be rather clued up.. well I should hope so!

glen still does cartoon cavalcade for school children, he was at Bothwell primary in South Lanarkshire today and the children from 5 to 12 years old loved him and his cartoons.

Good to hear Glen is still being adored by the youth of today! He deserves an OBE that bloke.
